The rebuilt areas can be machined to tight tolerances with the required surface finish. The coatings used for mis-machined applications typically have a composition similar to that of the substrate. For dimensional restoration of worn parts, typically a material more wear resistant than the substrate is used in order to prevent further damage. Specialized thermal spray coatings (abradables) are used for clearance control in rotary equipment.
