Protective barrier against abrasion

When aggressive glass fibers in plastic materials attack injection molds, not only does BALINIT® CROMA PLUS form an effective protective barrier against abrasion – the coating also ensures better flow behavior of the melt, reduces injection pressure and extends maintenance intervals. Both mold maker Siebenwurst and car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz have benefited from this protective coating in the production of trunk recesses for the EQS electric car.

Protective barrier against abrasion

Reducing car weight using glass fibers
In electromobility, lightweight construction is a key advantage: the lighter the vehicle, the longer its range. Fiber-reinforced composites, such as organic sheets, are therefore among the preferred materials. They form a stable matrix consisting of a thermoplastic layer and glass, carbon or aramid fibers, and they reduce weight by replacing metal.

The challenge: highly abrasive glass fiber composite on the molding tool
A mix of polypropylene with 50 percent glass fibers was used for the trunk recess of a current Mercedes-Benz electric model. This was a huge challenge for the mold-making specialists at Siebenwurst, because what’s good for the weight is bad for the mold. Their challenge was to protect the injection mold from the highly abrasive glass fibers.

No coating, no hope
Producing the trunk recess isn’t the first project Siebenwurst has delivered in cooperation with Mercedes-Benz. Anton Liebl has worked at Siebenwurst, based in the Bavarian town of Dietfurt, for a proud 46 years, and he remembers the well-known car manufacturer approaching his company back in 2008. At the time, the Project Manager recommended a coating from Oerlikon Balzers to protect injection molds against abrasive composites. “We have exclusively used Oerlikon Balzers coatings for a long time,” says Liebl.

“Coatings are indispensable for overcoming the challenges posed by composites,”

The dazzling coating is the perfect solution
Following this positive experience, an Oerlikon Balzers coating was again part of the specifications for the latest project: BALINIT® CROMA PLUS. The chromium nitride-based PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) coating, which dazzles like a rainbow, is the perfect solution for highly wear-resistant injection molds. Its capabilities were demonstrated again in the production of glass fiber-reinforced plastic compartments at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Hamburg, where the coating has ensured a very high number of shots and longer maintenance intervals as a result.

125 years of experience
Siebenwurst uses its 125 years of in-depth expertise and experience to develop solutions for these and other complex challenges. The company lives up to its reputation as the best problem-solver for its customers – from the design prototype through to series production.

High-end hot runner system
But it’s not just in coating services that the two companies work together. For the next project involving a coating from Oerlikon Balzers, a hot runner system from the company’s sister brand Oerlikon HRSflow – effectively a complete solution from a single source – will be delivered to Siebenwurst. And this isn’t their first joint project either: Siebenwurst was already a HRSflow customer before it became part of Oerlikon.
