Metal additive manufacturing, commonly known as 3-D printing, can be a game changer in medical treatment. In addition to manufacturing surgical implant and instrument systems, Oerlikon provides feedback on Design for Manufacturing (DFM) for additive and conventional manufacturing for the orthopedic and spine markets. Supply chains in the medical field can be long, complex and expensive. Oerlikon offers a prescription for the medical device industry: a single supplier to support product development and to supply equipment, materials, specialized processes such as additive manufacturing and PVD coatings, as well as complete medical devices. What would have required three or more suppliers can now be done by one, resulting in cost savings to the customer and improved efficiencies.

Oerlikon application engineers work with customers to understand device requirements and then develop manufacturing processes or coating solutions that meet the customer’s needs. Oerlikon’s growing additive manufacturing capabilities, coupled with its conventional manufacturing expertise of medical devices, present customers with a choice of production solutions. Post production, Oerlikon can apply antimicrobial, anti-reflective and wear-resistant coatings or supply biocompatible coating materials such as titanium and/or hydroxyapatite powders that will make for a more successful implant performance or extend the life span of the devices.

The global spine implant market is growing rapidly – 5% annually by some estimates. As the baby boomer generation ages, demand for spinal surgeries increases. Oerlikon has been serving the spinal implant market for some 20 years.

Metal additive manufacturing, or 3-D printing, is already widely used to provide new and cost-effective solutions for producing spinal implants. Additive manufacturing allows for the creation of porous surfaces that promote bony ingrowth and fixation of spinal implants, as well as for the creation of implants in complex geometries that could not be made previously. Oerlikon also offers spinal implants made from other materials, including the thermoplastic PEEK.

Artificial joints

The average age of a person who receives a total knee or total hip replacment is about 65, and each patient hopes to avoid a second replacement at an advanced age. There is a great need to produce implants that last longer and perform consistently. Oerlikon offers multiple products and services to implant manufacturers to help them produce long-lasting, high quality, easily integrated artificial joints. 

A critical factor influencing the success of an implant is how well the natural bone attaches to the implant. Oerlikon addresses this in the production and post-production processes. 3-D printing allows the customer to develop and manufacture implants with trabecular structures that match the pore geometry and density of natural bone, promoting bone ingrowth.  Post production, Oerlikon’s titanium thermal spray powders help modify and roughen the implant’s surface and bioactive hydroxyapatite coatings actively accelerate bone ingrowth.

Dental implants / abutments

Dental implants are often the preferred solution for patients who need teeth replaced because the new teeth look and feel natural. The process requires implants to be placed in the patient’s jawbone and attached to a custom-made crown using an abutment. Oerlikon produces a range of coatings and coating systems that boost the quality and success of dental implants: BALIMED C and DLC coatings promote better clinical outcomes by improving screw adjustability and BALIMED A coated abutment screws show better abrasion resistance and help maintain screw joint stability.
