Sustainable, durable and safe mobility

Oerlikon supports the automotive industry with solutions that make mobility safer and more sustainable. Our technologies protect battery systems, reduce weight, lower friction and improve manufacturing efficiency, helping both drivers and manufacturers.

Sustainable, durable and safe mobility

Modern mobility demands safety, durability and efficiency. Oerlikon provides technologies that help electric vehicles, conventional drivetrains and production processes become more sustainable while improving performance for manufacturers and drivers alike.

Oerlikon has developed a new thermal battery protection system with thin, 3D formable insulation layers that shield battery modules from overheating and provide electrical insulation. This helps reduce the risk of thermal runaway, a chain reaction in the battery that in the worst case can result in a vehicle fire, endangering passengers and emergency responders.

Integrated cooling elements help keep high-performance batteries at their optimal temperature, which supports longer driving range and extended battery life. The system is also the first fully mica‑free thermal shield on the market, using materials that are not oil‑based and meet the highest ESG standards.

Every kilogram saved reduces energy use and emissions. In the Mazda MX 30 e SKYACTIV R EV, engineers used a thermal spray coating from Oerlikon to manufacture the rotary engine’s housing from lightweight aluminum instead of cast iron.

This reduced engine weight by more than 15 kilograms without compromising wear protection or durability, even under high temperatures.

For vehicles with combustion engines, the focus is on reducing fuel consumption, extending service life and lowering CO₂ emissions. Oerlikon’s ultra-thin PVD coatings reduce friction and wear in drivetrains, valve systems, bearings and electric drive components, making vehicles more efficient.

Thermal spray coatings protect cylinder bores, brake discs and turbocharger parts, supporting better performance and longer maintenance intervals. These technologies are also used in motorsports, where Oerlikon’s BALIQ solutions protect highly stressed engine and transmission parts.

Sustainable mobility begins long before a car hits the road. Oerlikon’s precision hot runner systems help manufacturers produce plastic components with high dimensional accuracy, consistent quality and smooth surfaces. Combined with wear-resistant tool coatings, these systems reduce scrap, extend tool life and lower maintenance needs.

For example, the BALINIT MAYURA coating protects molding and stamping tools against wear and material build-up, improving uptime and reducing cleaning. Across thousands of components in every vehicle, these efficiencies add up to significant resource savings for suppliers and the environment.
