Position: R and D Technician

Location: Plymouth

 

Supports the project goals and objectives of the R&D Project Engineers by performing engineering technician duties and giving input based on practical knowledge and experience. Supports R&D Project Engineers in creating test plans for the development of powders and/or to test or optimize Lab equipment (e.g., improving R&D Vacuum Atomizer throughput and its daily operation). Manufactures developmental (test and prototype) atomized powders based on requirements (e.g., information received as test plan or specifications) and documents results.

 

Responsibilities

Perform the duties identified for this job description to the best of your abilities at all times, taking sole responsibility for your actions and the results thereof.

Interact with managers, supervisors, co-workers, and customers in a positive-friendly manner.

Operates lab equipment (hands-on) for test powder manufacturing, such as Vacuum  Atomizer (Vacuum Melting and Atomization), screening & blending equipment, Rotap sieve system, air classifier, Tap Density.

Caries out analytical tests for powder characterization (e.g., Microtrac, Hall Flow, Rotap sieve analysis).

Performs preventative maintenance on vacuum atomizer, lab equipment and is involved in organizing or carrying out repairs or maintenance activities.

Documents all results and process steps related to powder prototype-manufacturing.

Organizes or supports creation of shipping or analytical documentation for processing and shipping experimental powders to customers (both domestic and overseas).

Inventory control of developed powder samples.

Be willing to cross-train in other areas and departments to broaden your capabilities and assist with the overall performance of the company.

Supports (if needed hands-on) the scale-up of new powders in production.

Must be a U.S. Citizen.

Must have an associate degree at a minimum in Science Related Field (STEM). Must have 4 to 6 years of experience in manufacturing metallic powders, preferably atomized powders.

Experience in R&D work environment is a plus. Must pass a physical exam and drug screening.

Must be able to read, write, speak and understand plain English with good communication skills.

Must be able to work with easy mathematical formulas (mathematical skills required) Must be able to read and understand Risk Assessment (RA) and Job Hazards Analysis (JHA). Must use safe behavior at all times. Must wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when required.

Must be able to read and understand standard operating procedures, material specifications, and instruction manuals.

Must not operate or energize equipment, for which you have not been properly trained. Must have knowledge of ISO and AS quality requirements for work activities.

Must keep working areas neat, tidy and organized at all times. Must actively participate in continual improvement activities.

Must be able to safely operate a forklift or powered industrial vehicle. Must be able to safely operate overhead cranes.

Must be able to use and operate manufacturing equipment, machines, and small tools Must be able to work well within a team.

Must have basic computer skills (Windows, SAP, Internet Explorer, Office, label software) Opportunity to volunteer as a First responder (First aid, CPR, AED training required)

Be able to provide positive mentoring, coaching and training.
