MTC3: Taking a reality check on AM industrialization

Exploring the opportunities and challenges in additive manufacturing

Additive manufacturing (AM) is driving a new industrial revolution with impact on the aerospace, automotive, medical, energy and general manufacturing sectors. In some industries, industrialization is progressing more rapidly than others. What can the success stories we’ve realized so far teach us about opportunities to accelerate innovation and adoption in other sectors?

That was among the key questions inspiring discussion and debate at the 3rd Munich Technology Conference on Additive Manufacturing (MTC3), held October 8-10, 2019 at the Technical University of Munich, Germany.  Once again, the conference provided a platform for all stakeholders — industry leaders, scientists, engineers, AM solution providers, educators and government officials — to explore the roles they can play in taking AM forward.

Giving AM the place it deserves

MTC is one of the largest annual global platforms dedicated to AM professionals to network, share success stories and brainstorm on solutions to challenges.

The conference was launched by Oerlikon in 2017 in partnership with the Technical University of Munich. Just two years later, the third conference attracted more than 1 500 participants and 50 speakers from across the additive manufacturing ecosystem. As in 2018, MTC was realized in collaboration with some of the most innovative players in the AM field. This year, the partners included as well leaders in business strategy. Growing recognition of AM’s industrial potential is reflected in the broad scope of the MTC3 partners: Technical University Munich, GE Additive, Linde, McKinsey & Company, Siemens and TÜV SÜD.

The theme of this year’s conference was putting AM to a reality check. Throughout MTC3, leading experts addressed the technical and regulatory challenges that the technology must address as proponents continue to pursue innovation. Proof points presented at the conference addressed questions and concerns about scalability, cost, production efficiency and opportunities to customize solutions by sector.

Drawing attention to the key AM themes

As a prelude to the conference, MTC3 debuted a pre-conference networking event on October 8 in collaboration with the 3D-Printing Cluster 3DPC. Eight start-ups pitched their innovations and ideas to the established corporations in the AM industry. Participants exchanged ideas and explored potential joint ventures, strengthening the AM community.

MTC3 partners led a full day of workshops on October 10. Sessions addressed topics such as a reality check on metal AM, industrializing AM, a look forward to 2025, metal alloy development for AM, standards for industrial grade conformity, factory design for AM industrialization, accelerating industrial adoption of AM and addressing pain points in moving to full-scale additive production.

A further highlight: tech writer Rachel Park, who covers additive manufacturing, conducted live interviews with leaders from the AM world. These innovators offered their commentary on the transformational potential of this technology and shared their vision of where they see the greatest potential for AM applications.

The success of this year’s event further demonstrates the value that MTC delivers in furthering awareness of AM as a transformational technology. We have seen once again that when industry, academia and public institutions work together as partners and exchange ideas, they help to ensure that AM will achieve the place it merits as a core component of future industrial processing.
