How an almost invisible technology improves a car’s efficiency.


When a new car is launched, one of the key messages in the promotion campaign is often how much weight the car has lost. This is because weight is directly linked to the fuel efficiency and performance of the car. But this is not easy to achieve. With each new generation of cars, they need to be better, faster and equipped with all the latest features and functionalities which comes with additional weight.

To summarize, by simply coating key engine parts such as piston rings, fuel injectors, cylinder bores, and others, manufacturers can reduce corrosion and friction for greater durability. Coatings increase fuel efficiency not only through friction reduction but also by making light metals such as aluminum as durable as heavy metals and allow manufacturers to build smaller engines with fewer cylinders, making them lighter. The result of a comprehensive approach to component coating can reduce fuel consumption by 2 to 4%, reduce oil consumption by 30%, and shed up to 12% of the engine block’s weight.

That is why coatings in cars is a rapidly growing business. The automotive industry only started having coated parts in a car in 1990. At that time, approximately 15 parts in a car were coated. Today, the number of coated parts have reached up to 100. And, it will increase as we develop new coatings and new materials.
