Oerlikon Metco expands coating services with new facility in Canada

Winterthur, Switzerland — July 16, 2015 — First joint technology service center marks milestone in Oerlikon’s strategy for its Surface Solutions Segment.

Today, Oerlikon Metco announced the opening of the company’s newest coating service center in Canada, and the first facility to leverage the combined competencies of Oerlikon Metco and sister brand Oerlikon Balzers. Located in Guelph, Ontario, the facility is well positioned to serve Canadian customers in aerospace and other strategically important markets. Guelph was chosen for its thriving business base and its excellent logistics to eastern Canadian customers in Ontario and Quebec.

This first joint technology service center marks a milestone in Oerlikon’s strategy for its Surface Solutions Segment to provide customers with a complete array of surfacing technologies and services. “Offering both thin film and thermal spray coating technologies makes us a unique supplier in the surface solutions market. Through this first joint center, we can provide Canadian customers not only with the benefits of both technologies, but also with better services and interactions in close proximity,” says Dr. Roland Herb, CEO of the Surface Solutions Segment.

Oerlikon Metco will provide customers with a comprehensive portfolio of thermal spray services, including pre- and post-coat machining. Oerlikon Balzers will provide thin film (PVD) coatings, including Nitriding and regrinding services.

The new facility currently employs about 20 people and is expected to grow as new services are added in future phases. The Guelph facility is Oerlikon Metco’s second coating service facility in Canada. The company’s facility in Edmonton, Alberta, serves the strategically important Canadian oil and gas markets.
