In high-temperature environments, our Thermal Barrier Coating (TBC) solutions protect critical components from destructive mechanisms and provide insulation. This improves the operational efficiency of dynamic systems such as gas turbine engines, diesel engines, and turbochargers.
We can tailor a coating to a thermal barrier coating system to meet the specific factors of your application, such as properly matching the thermal expansion coefficients to the substrate material. In addition to requiring a thermal barrier, a component exposed to extreme heat may also require protection from high-temperature corrosion. Thin film coatings, such as Aluminum Titanium Nitride (AlTiN), increase cutting tools’ surface hardness and oxidation resistance. Use this application to increase tool life and machining speed, while simultaneously reducing the lubrication and cooling fluid needed.
A material having a high capacity for thermal absorption is needed for specialized nuclear fusion applications. Coatings of tungsten on graphite or steel substrates, applied using a controlled atmosphere (vacuum) thermal spray system, are particularly suitable for these applications.
Just as some thermal spray coatings are used to impede thermal conductivity, other thermal spray coatings are used to promote thermal conductivity. Thermal-sprayed copper and aluminum are examples of thermally conductive surfaces. These coatings not only promote heat transfer, but can evenly distribute the heat for even greater efficiency.

Modern coating systems typically consist of two components:
- Also acts as an oxidation resistant layer
- Metalic material, typically MCrAlY
- Ceramic material, typically Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ)

Thermal-sprayed TBC coatings are used when the insulating layer must be very thin, follow the contour of the substrate, and withstand severe environment service. Typical applications include gas turbine hot section blades, vanes, and combustor components.
