Oerlikon Barmag presents solutions for composite materials

Remscheid/Chemnitz, February 20, 2012 - At the Paris JEC Composites Show, Oerlikon Barmag will be premiering spinning and winding solutions for special yarns between March 27 and 29, 2012. Furthermore, the company will be showcasing its competence in the area of pumps for composite materials.

Fiber composite materials are considered the materials of the future. They promise solutions wherever light, but nevertheless stable, structures are required. The materials are deployed in the automobile construction sector, in the civil aviation industry, in sports, in wind power systems and in architecture. In contrast to steel, composite materials – in addition to their considerably lower weight – excel in terms of their chemical resistance, higher resistance to pressure and greater tensile strength and their heat resistance. However, the production of the fundamental fibers is extremely complex and challenging.

Fiber composite material components are made up of two different primary constituents: the reinforcing fiber fabric and the embedding matrix. The fabric – which provides the rigidity for the components – can be either carbon fibers or aramid, whereas the matrix, that lends the component the desired shape, is made up by mixing resins with hardeners.

The Oerlikon Barmag portfolio offers the spinning and metering pumps for in-process requirements as well as a range of special yarn winders for the take-up of carbon and textile glass fibers and aramids. Also exhibiting at the trade fair, the coating professionals at Oerlikon Balzers and the vacuum specialists at Oerlikon Leybold round off the Swiss Oerlikon Group’s composite materials competencies perfectly.
