Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum wins another steel degassing order

Innovative vacuum solution offers energy saving of up to 90 %

November 9, 2012 – Indian steel manufacturer JAILAXMI CASTING & ALLOYS has commissioned Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum to supply a vacuum system for steel degassing. The new procedure reduces energy consumption in this process step by up to 30 %, while the redundant design guarantees a stable and efficient production process. “This order is a successful milestone in our efforts to penetrate the global steel market”, says Dr. Martin Füllenbach, CEO of Oerlikon’s Vacuum Segment.

Degassing plays a key role in steel manufacture. The process step removes the gases released from the molten metal, thus helping to refine the steel. Last year Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum developed a flexible vacuum solution using standard pumps to replace the procedure that had previously been used. The new solution features intelligent control to produce an efficient, high-availability system. It comprises the latest range of RUVAC WH7000 root pumps and the DRYVAC DV1200 dry screw pump. The robust pumps are able to handle applications with high dust and steam loads. They also require almost zero maintenance, thus keeping operating costs low. At the Indian customer this vacuum technology offers an energy saving of up to 30 %. Where existing steam injector pumps are replaced, the energy saving can be as high as 90 %.

The new order gives Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum additional and strategically important market share. The new vacuum solution is already in use in steelworks in Germany, Italy and China, where it handles charges of up to 120 tons. “This order shows once again that we can be successful with innovative solutions even in a difficult market environment”, says Dr. Martin Füllenbach, CEO of Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum.
