Position: Key Account Manager (Sales Engineer)

Location: Schaumburg, IL (Remote within the Midwest, North or South East OK)


Reporting to the Head of Sales for Precision Components for the Americas, the Key Account Manager/Sales Engineer will be responsible for positioning technical thin film coating solutions to the Aerospace and Defense industries within North America. This role will ensure the creation of new business avenues and drive topline revenue growth.  He/she will have a strong suite of contacts for both the engineering and commercial side within the perspective customer base. 



  • The main task will be to develop defined key accounts in the North American market for aerospace applications (engines, airframes, etc.) and defense applications.
  • This individual will be responsible for actively “hunting” for new business to sell engineered coating solutions to new customers and accounts which also may include non-aero defense applications
  • This individual will develop new accounts and identify new revenue opportunities via cold calling, networking, customer site visits and attending trade shows and events.  He/she will also be responsible for coordinating sales activities with the global segment manager and the US Sales team. 
  • He/she must have the ability to strike the right balance as a credible business professional dedicated to customer service while targeting the development of a high performance revenue strategy for their customer base. 
  • This role will also be responsible for tracking and managing a customer pipeline within Oerlikon’s CRM.


We expect

  • 5+ years of selling/market development experience in surface treatments (i.e. PVD & CVD coatings, Nitriding, Thermal Spray etc.) industry is preferable.  Alternatively strong background in materials science or mechanical engineering.
  • 5+ years of progressive sales and/or account management experience mainly for the Aerospace Industry or Defense Industry. 3 years of experience with in a consultative sales role is preferred.
  • 3 years of experience with in a consultative sales role is preferred.
  • Establish target lists of customers and formulate and implement a territorial “outside sales” plan to identify sales opportunities and qualify potential customers.
  • Attend sales meetings locally, regionally and/or nationally as required.
  • Meet and/or exceed annual sales targets.
  • Identify opportunities within existing customers to drive the sale of additional service offerings to support other market segments.
  • Provide status updates on progress towards sales targets.
  • Ideally strong rolodex of technical and commercial contacts from engineering to managerial across various product groups.
  • Strong track record of successfully selling solutions (services).
  • Ability to think and plan strategically but also be able to manage day-to-day tactical issues
  • Excellent problem solving and communications skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related discipline required (equivalent experience may substitute).
  • Proficiency working with MS Office (i.e., Excel, Work, and PowerPoint) is required
  • Effective verbal /writing skills and strong presentation skills are required
  • Must be energetic, goals-oriented, and effective at project planning
  • Must be willing to travel domestically or internationally as required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related discipline required (equivalent experience may substitute).
