Position: HSE Engineer

Location: Plymouth, MI

The health, safety, and environmental engineer is responsible for developing and driving a safe environment.  They provide technical guidance to ensure development, implementation and improvement of environmental programs.  HSE engineers interpret existing environment regulations and design specifically focused plans to minimize environmental hazards such as spills.

Responsibilities:

  1. Monitors, evaluates, and re-engineers business processes with the objectives of reducing complexity and ensuring the health and safety of employees, while maximizing the production efforts and maintaining environmental protection requirements. 
  2. Prepare, review, and update environmental investigation reports
  3. Design projects leading to environmental protection, such as water reclamation facilities, air pollution control systems, and operations that convert waste to energy
  4. Obtain, update, and maintain plans, permits, and standard operating procedures
  5. Provide technical support for environmental remediation projects and for legal actions
  6. Analyze scientific data and do quality-control checks
  7. Monitor the progress of environmental improvement programs
  8. Inspect industrial and municipal facilities and programs to ensure compliance with environmental regulations
  9. Advise corporations and government agencies about procedures for cleaning up contaminated sites
  10. Knowledge of local, state, and federal health, safety and environmental regulations. 
  11. Uses the principles of “lean manufacturing” and the Five-S principles of “sort”, “set in order”, “shine”, “standardize”, and “sustain” to drive the modification of work practices to obtain excellent results.
  12. Conducts risk assessment for contractors and non-routine work tasks as required.
  13. Implementation and maintenance of ISO14001, and OHSAS 18001/ISO45001 management systems.
  14. Maintains and updates environmental permits as required and prepares and files environmental reports to required agencies.
  15. Maintains facility chemical inventory and third-party safety data sheet database and manages hazardous waste and recycling programs.
  16. Acts as a consultant to the Director of Operations, Senior Managers, supervisors, leads, and process engineers in relation to all environmental manufacturing matters.
  17. Partners with the management team to drive a health, safety and lean engineering culture at all levels and functions within the facility.

 We Expect:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering, or related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in environmental, health and safety role.
  • Must read, understand, and comply with all Environmental, Safety, and Health, and Quality procedures and policies – both - corporate and regulatory, and ensure Oerlikon Five Golden Rules of safety are followed at all times.

  • Must have experience in a process-related industry such as:  food, chemicals, or pharmaceuticals. (Familiarity with powder processing techniques including atomization {e.g., spray drying, gas atomization, water atomization}, screening, air classification, blending, and conveying is desirable).
  • Must be able to read and understand Risk Assessment (RA) and Job Hazards Analysis (JHA).
  • Must have knowledge of ISO and AS quality requirements for work activities, as well as familiarity with Lean Manufacturing Principles, 5S, and/or related methodologies (i.e., Six Sigma, Muda, Kaizen, “5 Whys”, etc.).
  • Must be able to use and operate manufacturing equipment, machines, and small tools
  • Experience with SAP or a comparable business enterprise system is desirable.
