BALIQ® CARBOS on cam shafts for racing engines show improved performance when compared to conventional hydrogenated DLC coatings
BALIQ® CARBOS or BALIQ® CARBOS STAR on finger followers show superior wear resistance to hydrogenated DLC coatings at highest contact pressures
Piston pins of racing engines coated with BALIQ® CARBOS or BALIQ® CARBOS STAR show less wear and higher lifetime compared to hydrogenated DLC coatings
BALIQ® CARBOS - Valves and piston ring
BALIQ® CARBOS is the superior coating against very abrasive fibres due to its high hardness and low surface roughness

BALIQ® CARBOS - The amorphous carbon coating that goes beyond DLC

Oerlikon Balzers’ amorphous hydrogen-free carbon (a-C) BALIQ® CARBOS coating features an exceptional combination of high hardness, low friction and low roughness.

BALIQ® CARBOS outperforms hydrogenated DLC coatings in many engineering applications with extreme contact pressures and sliding velocities. With a high proportion of tetrahedral bonds (50-60%), BALIQ® CARBOS provides substantially higher abrasive wear resistance than standard DLC´s (a-C:H).

  • Advantages

    Advantages

    • Unique combination of high hardness, low wear rate, low friction coefficient and low roughness.
    • Markedly improved performance versus standard DLC´s for demanding tribological applications.
    • Low process temperature, enabling a wider range of substrate materials.

General remark All given data are approximate values, they depend on application, environment and test condition.
*Coating hardness HIT[GPa] Measured by nano indentation according to ISO 14577. For multilayers the hardness of the different layers varies.
**Coefficient of friction (dry) vs. steel Determined by ball-on-disc test in dry condition with an Steel ball according to ASTM G99. During run-in the given values may be exceeded.
****Max. service temp. [°C] These are approximate values out of the field. Due to thermodynamic laws there is a dependency of pressure in application.
