Steve Ferdon, Director of Engineering Technology at Cummins, presents the award to Dr Jörg Jorzick, Head of New Acquisitions Automotive Solutions at Oerlikon Balzers, in Columbus

Cummins Inc., a business based in Columbus, Indiana, USA, develops and manufactures diesel and alternative fuel engines for lorries, buses, transporters and generators. The firm operates in over 150 countries across the globe, employing almost 40,000 people, and has worked alongside Oerlikon Balzers since 2000.

Oerlikon Balzers coats highly sensitive components for the diesel injectors and pumps used in the high-tech engines Cummins produces. Heavy transporters, mining vehicles, fire engines and industrial generators must meet every more stringent requirements in terms of emissions and efficiency. The BALINIT coatings applied to engines and transmission components are key to meeting these requirements, as they make the components more hard-wearing while also reducing friction. The high loads these heavy-duty engines are expected to cope with means that the coating must be designed and applied reliably and with great accuracy for the specific application.

The successful product launch of a new component developed by Cummins, in which Oerlikon’s expertise and services played a crucial role, underlines the excellent collaboration between these two global technology leaders.
