Oerlikon Balzers – first coating company to enter the Indonesian market

With the new joint venture company “PT. Oerlikon Balzers Artoda Indonesia”, Oerlikon Balzers establishes its first presence in the Indonesian coating market and is set to continue its strong growth in the coating business.

Oerlikon Balzers and PT. Artoda Global signed the joint venture contract for a new coating centre based in Jakarta. PT. Artoda Global is an Indonesian company with a well established network in Indonesia and Japan particularly. The scope of business of the Artoda Group spans across the automotive industry and consists of more than 50 companies.

The joint venture will help to fulfil the growing advanced surface treatment needs of the Indonesian economy, notably the motorbike and car industry present in this country. Besides, the Indonesian government has just signed its first free trade agreement, which will come into effect with Japan at the beginning of next year. It is therefore expected that Japanese companies will open-up more production facilities in Indonesia. In this respect, Oerlikon Balzers will very much benefit from the longstanding and very close relationship that PT. Artoda Global has with Japanese companies in Indonesia.

With the access into the Indonesian market, Oerlikon Balzers is now providing coating services through a global network with more than 80 production centres in 31 countries. "Our expansion to Indonesia is in line with our strategy to focus our growth on Asia. We are convinced that we have found in PT. Artoda Global the right partner to jointly develop the Indonesian market for advanced PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) coatings", states Hans Brändle, CEO Oerlikon Coating.

Damien Lim - Director of Business Development of PT. Artoda Global - will assume the function of Managing Director of the new production centre. "We are proud of opening the very first coating centre in Indonesia together with the world's leading supplier of PVD coatings. This joint venture spells the dawn of a new era for lowering costs and increasing productivity for the Indonesian manufacturing industry. Infrastructure, coating machine and trained staff will be ready by mid of July. About 25 people will be employed until end of 2008", says Damien Lim.
