Coating centre for low friction coatings inaugurated in Gunsan, South Korea

Since more than ten years Oerlikon Balzers Korea is active with tool and component coatings in the Korean market. To satisfy the growing need for products reducing CO2 emissions a new coating centre opens its doors in Gunsan in the province of Jeollabukdo, West Korea. This step is in line with our commitment to enable clean technology.

The Gunsan coating centre will be a competence centre for component coatings used in applications of the automotive, the electronics and the ship building industries. The new facilities are located in the Standard factory No. 3 in the Gunsan Free Trade Zone (GFTZ) inside the Gungang National Industrial Zone in Gunsan city. Companies like Hyundai Heavy Industries, GM Deawoo and Doosan Infracore are located close-by.

Oerlikon Balzers' coatings enable clean technology especially with components for the automotive and heavy industry. Coated components lead to better fuel economy and reduced exhaust emissions. Friction is reduced substantially for sliding components and the use of lubricant can be reduced to a minimum. The demand for clean technology increases on the Asian market. Leading Korean companies will benefit from the state of the art coating technology of Oerlikon Balzers.

"Due to the growing demand of the high tech industry in Korea and due to the success of Oerlikon Balzers Korea we decided to establish a centre of competence for leading edge coatings with very low friction helping to reduce CO2 emissions.", says Dr. Hans Brändle, CEO of Oerlikon Coating. With the inauguration of the new facility Oerlikon Balzers sets the flag as technology market leader - in coatings which enable clean technology.
