ePD

ePD is an environmentally-friendly and future-oriented coating procedure for the metallisation of plastic parts. As well as being used in the millions in automobiles, plastic parts with metallic effects are an important design element in numerous consumer products and in sanitary engineering. ePD is a proprietary Oerlikon Balzers technology.

What is ePD?

ePD combines low-emission PVD technology with a coating technique based on UV lacquer. Unlike conventional procedures, ePD employs no metal derivatives, such as chromium VI, and thus massively reduces the generation of non-recyclable heavy metal waste. This strategic technology and product expansion stems from the acquisition of the erstwhile Hartec company. Oerlikon Balzers, the PVD coatings pioneer, has adopted this completely new technology approach for electroplated-like surfaces and thus further developed an overall solution consisting of systems and process engineering.

The ePD™ procedure is geared towards an efficient use of materials and energy during production. ePD™ moreover offers innovative, functional qualities such as radar transparent metallization for distance sensor systems, lightweight construction and larger design diversity. A markedly shortened supply chain with efficient production logistics also positively impacts the environmental record.
