BALIQ CARBOS STAR The amorphous carbon coating for maximum load-bearing capacity

BALIQ® CARBOS or BALIQ® CARBOS STAR on finger followers show superior wear resistance to hydrogenated DLC coatings at highest contact pressures
BALIQ® CARBOS STAR on cam shafts for racing engines show improved performance when compared to conventional hydrogenated DLC coatings
Piston pins of racing engines coated with BALIQ® CARBOS or BALIQ® CARBOS STAR show less wear and higher lifetime compared to hydrogenated DLC coatings
BALIQ® CARBOS STAR is used for highly loaded precision valves, e.g for HPLC High Performance Liquid Chromatography valves, where hardenss, toughness low friction and smooth surfaces are required
BALIQ® CARBOS STAR outperforms TiN and CrN coatings in highly loaded valve seats due to its high hardness, low friction and toughness

The ideal coating for maximum load-bearing capacity depends to a large extent on the substrate used. Developed for softer substrates such as stainless steel and titanium, or substrates that are subject to continuous impacts, BALIQ® CARBOS STAR uses an additional chromium nitride-based layer to resist extreme loads.

This modified coating increases load-bearing capacity, provides the required surface hardness and significantly enhances the performance of the tribologically effective carbon coating. BALIQ® CARBOS STAR offers superior tribological performance and is therefore ideal for components subjected to extremely high loads.

High friction and wear are the most demanding challenges in applications such as racing car engines. When drivers push their racing cars to the limit, critical components such as piston pins, camshafts and finger followers need to deliver maximum performance and withstand extreme loads.

General remark All given data are approximate values, they depend on application, environment and test condition.
*Coating hardness HIT [GPa] Measured by nano indentation according to ISO 14577. For multilayers the hardness of the different layers varies. Hardness can be adapted to the application.
**Coefficient of friction (dry) vs. steel Determined by ball-on-disc test in dry condition with an Steel ball according to ASTM G99. During run-in the given values may be exceeded.
****Max. service temp. [°C] These are approximate values out of the field. Due to thermodynamic laws there is a dependency of pressure in application.
