Head of Additive Manufacturing Business Unit
Sven Hicken was named head of Oerlikon’s additive manufacturing business in October 2018. He is responsible for Oerlikon’s growing global additive manufacturing business, which employs about 300 people and comprises seven production facilities in three countries: Germany, the US and China.
Prior to joining Oerlikon, Sven spent most of his career in the automotive industry, bringing with him key insights into the challenges faced by Oerlikon customers and vast experience in managing global teams. Sven spent more than 20 years at BMW, Munich, in a variety of roles. Beginning with various project and R&D managerial roles, he was named Vice President, Strategy, Finance, Logistics and Quality Painted Body in 2005. He went on to hold vice president roles in production and product strategy, culminating in his final position as Vice President, Purchasing Quality Body, responsible for the worldwide purchasing and quality of body components for BMW.
Sven holds a degree in mechanical engineering from Technical University Munich, where his focus was on manufacturing technologies. He earned his PhD at RWTH Aachen, with a dissertation on spot welding aluminum. He is active in the ACOD, Automotive Cluster of Eastern Germany, which seeks to advance the automobile industry in the eastern part of the country.
Sven is married and has two children. An avid football fan, especially Bayern München, he also enjoys participating in many sports, especially biking.
General Manager of AM Services, Europe
Hendrik Alfter is General Manager of Oerlikon AM Europe. He is located in Barleben, Germany, where he also oversees the business unit’s primary European production facility. He is responsible for Oerlikon AM’s European operations and for the coordination of activities with other Oerlikon businesses in Europe, as well as between AM’s six sites globally.
Prior to joining AM in September 2019, Hendrik served as the Managing Director of Oerlikon Balzers, Germany, for five years, where he led the overall tools business in that country. He successfully led several reorganization and streamlining efforts at Balzers during his tenure. Hendrik spent 15 years at Schott AG in Mainz, Germany, in roles with progressive responsibility, culminating in the Head of Lean Transformation, a post he held for 4 years. He also led a business for Schott in the UK for three years.
Hendrik studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Aachen (RWTH) and holds a master’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Applied Science in Aachen.
Manager of AM Strategy
Jane is responsible for strategic planning at Oerlikon AM. One of her current focuses is to establish the business footprint for all AM offerings in China. Her current 5-year business plan is to establish the business footprint for all AM offerings in China. This will involve working closely with the China team, and developing and managing innovative market entry strategies. Her key objective is to deliver rapid growth and expansion, introducing new customers and sectors to the benefits of Additive Manufacturing.
She is a particularly motivated by the potential of AM to unleash design freedoms. She is keen to contribute to the growth of the new technology, and to create the next generation of solutions which will provide even more new possibilities. She believes that AM has the power to revolutionize industries, and help them become not only more efficient, but also more sustainable.
Jane started her career as a business development officer in Dalkia Asia to support and coordinate investment projects, including Acquisitions, JVs, and build-to-transfer projects for energy management contracts and renewable power plants. She moved to join the global think tank team of Deutsche Bank Asset Management, focusing on climate change driven investment strategy especially in China and Emerging markets. She worked then as a consultant specializing in market entry into China and PMI projects. Jane joined the Oerlikon group in 2014 as manager in group strategy. She was one of the early members of the AM initiation project, and transferred into Oerlikon AM in 2017.
Jane has a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from Peking University and a Master’s in International Business from HEC Paris.
General Manager of AM Services, US
Bryan Dods is General Manager of AM Services, US. He is located in Huntersville, North Carolina, near Charlotte, where he oversees Oerlikon’s new state-of-the art production facility. He is responsible for Oerlikon AM’s US component production operations and coordination with European facilities.
Since joining Oerlikon in June 2019, Dods has been focusing on building stronger relationships with customers and reaching out to interested parties. Prior to Oerlikon, Dods worked in a variety of manufacturing consultancy roles at his own firms and others. He first began working with additive manufacturing in the early 2000s while working at Boeing in St. Louis. He spent more than 10 years in the aerospace industry, working for McDonnell Douglas/Boeing, after which he worked as an executive for GE Power in South Carolina for several years.
Bryan is named on 12 manufacturing patents and applications with eight in additive manufacturing. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in Metallurgy, Mechanics & Materials Science from Michigan State University. He holds a Master of Science and an MBA from Washington University in St. Louis and a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Indiana University.
Head of AM Industrialization
Christian is head of AM industrialization at Oerlikon, and he is spearheading the growth of AM and its acceptance as a mainstream supplier for series production across industries. His ambition is to establish Oerlikon as the globally recognized AM market leader. He believes that Oerlikon AM should be not simply the upcoming market leader, but a synonym for Additive Manufacturing.
Before joining Oerlikon AM, Christian acted as consultant for various international market leaders establishing their engineering, their business and market launch strategies. He also spent nearly 10 years as a management and technology consultant at TCW in Munich as a Head of Practice for Operations and Post-Merger Integration.
Christian has a degree in mechanical engineering and business administration degree from the University of Applied Sciences, Darmstadt as well as a PhD in business administration from the Technical University of Munich. Prior to his formal studies, he spent 5 years in software development.
HR Business Partner, AM
Nicole is the HR Business Partner for the Oerlikon AM Business Unit. She is located in Munich (Feldkirchen), Germany, and is responsible for overseeing all human resource issues for the business unit worldwide. She also serves as Head of HR for AM in Germany.
Prior to joining Oerlikon AM in November 2019, Nicole served as the HR business partner for Denso Automotive Deutschland’s Thermal Europe Business Unit for Center North Europe for four years. She spent 13 years at Denso in a variety of leading HR positions before being named business partner. The earlier part of Nicole’s career was spent in HR positions at BDW Technologies, Otto Sauer Achsenfabrik (axle manufacturer), Deutsche Eisenbahn Consulting (German railway) and sustainable mobility firm ALSTOM Anlagen-und Automatisierungstechnik.
Nicole holds a Master of Business Administration from the IHK in Frankfurt, Germany, where she also studied business with a specialization in human resources.

Nicole loves to spend her time in nature, in the mountains with her family for skiing and hiking and enjoys scuba diving and swimming at the seaside.
Head of AM R&D
Mikkel Pedersen is Head of Oerlikon AM’s R&D team. His team of 12 scientists and engineers provides development support to the Oerlikon AM production sites and conducts research for the additive manufacturing industry.
Our goal is to enable new products developed for AM and understand the gaps with existing materials to enable the development of future alloys. I´m proud to lead a team of innovators and new knowledge generators who are not afraid to challenge the limits of the current AM technologies.
Mikkel has worked in additive manufacturing his whole career, first joining Oerlikon AM in 2017, where he focused on projects for the aerospace, defense and space industries.
Previously Mikkel worked as a Design & Analysis Engineer for additive manufacturing for GKN Aerospace Services Ltd. In the UK, where he designed components for Electron Beam Melting (EBM) and Laser Powder Bed (LPB) machines.
Mikkel holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and Production and a Master of Science in Design of Mechanical Systems, both from Aalborg University in Aalborg, Denmark.
General Manager & Head of Finance, AM, Germany
As General Manager/ Head of Finance & Controlling of the Innovation and Technology Center in Munich Yvonne is supporting the business not only in all finance-related questions but also on organizational and administrative tasks.
Her motivation is to bring in transparency of the figures, to ensure compliance with internal and external rules and regulations but establish processes as simple as possible.
In the past Yvonne took several roles in different companies of the Oerlikon group. Before she joined Additive Manufacturing she hold the position as Head of Finance at Leybold GmbH in Cologne where she was in charge for the financial shared service department, global transfer pricing and supported the CFO in various projects.
Yvonne holds a MBA from the Hochschule Koblenz as well as degrees as a Tax Specialist and a Certified Accountant
Head of AM Commercial Strategy
Kartik is head of the AM business unit’s commercial strategy and leader of its business excellence team. His responsibilities include strategy planning and development, shaping the commercial go-to-market approach and improving sales operations in efforts to boost topline growth. He oversees intelligence gathering and implementation of sales tools and processes, while focusing on the customer experience.
In this newly created role, Kartik has the opportunity to combine the knowledge and experience he brings from his previous roles as Head of AM Marketing and Head of the AM Materials business line. He enjoys working in an entrepreneurial group within a larger established company, and particularly likes the challenge of identifying customer groups who can benefit from additive manufacturing and pairing them with the appropriate experts and technology at Oerlikon AM.
Before joining Oerlikon AM in 2016, Kartik worked in business and product development at a VC-backed powder technology company in the UK. He was also responsible for technology licenses and helping raise capital for venture capitalist and strategic investors.
Kartik holds a master’s degree in aerospace materials engineering and a Ph.D. in titanium production from Imperial College in London.
Head of AM Marketing and Communications
Kerstin is responsible for the development and execution of marketing and communications strategy for the AM Business Unit. With the help of a team based in Germany and the US, she oversees everything from brand management and messaging, to marketing campaigns and events to media and public relations. She also manages internal and external communications and coordinates communications between the Oerlikon Group and other Oerlikon businesses.
Kerstin brings more than a decade of experience in marketing and communications, the majority of that spent in additive manufacturing. She finds joy in giving Oerlikon a voice and face and shaping how it presents itself to the media, customers, partners and employees. A passionate learner with a strong business acumen and intense curiosity, Kerstin enjoys working in complex global organizations, where every day brings new opportunities and challenges. She holds a PhD in the field of Media and Communication Science.
Head of AM Controlling
As BU Controller at Oerlikon AM Michael is responsible for all matters relating to finance within the Business Unit.
His motivations include a determination to strive for process excellence and to create financial transparency to closely monitor and steer the business performance; he sees the need to achieve this by developing intelligent data processing and by simplifying systems and procedures, a perfect reflection of one of the key strengths of AM manufacturing.
Michael began his career in banking, before moving into financial management in the manufacturing industry. He has held many finance and project management roles in other Oerlikon divisions, including Business Controller at Oerlikon Group Headquarters, Pfäffikon and Project Manager Business Strategy, Oerlikon Leybold Vacuum GmbH, Köln.
Michael is a keen sportsman, with an enthusiasm for mountain climbing, sailing and skiing. He holds a Master’s degree in Economics from the University of Zürich.
