Profile Oerlikon Solar

Oerlikon Solar offers field proven production solutions for Thin Film Silicon Solar Modules based on its extensive experience in thin film mass production technology. The fully automated high yield, high uptime and low maintenance solutions focus on reducing device cost and maximizing productivity. Oerlikon mass production solutions are modular and upgradeable in throughput, as well as process technology.

Products and Solutions

Oerlikon’s field-proven production solutions include the systems and process technologies for all critical mass production steps:

  • Deposition of the transparent conducting front and back contacts
  • Deposition of photovoltaic thin films converting light into electrical energy
  • Laser patterning to generate the serially connected cells

Automation, pre- and post-processing to prepare the glass substrates and finish the Modules is implemented with qualified systems of partner companies.

These modular total solutions are complemented by an experienced R&D group, an in-house pilot line able to produce modules in full production size, process integration & ramp up and global customer support.

Markets

Oerlikon is targeting the equipment market for mass production of large area Thin Film Silicon Solar Modules because this technology allows the lowest device cost per Wp. In addition all used materials are easy to procure and environmentally friendly.

With a total annual volume of roughly CHF 180 to 200 million for 2005, this market has certain startup character. Considering the ongoing shortage of crystalline silicon, an annual growth rate in excess of 30 percent is anticipated for the coming years.
